The Luau cowboys are a band that do an amazing range of songs and instrumental styles. They cover some vintage bluegrass, a bit of Hawaiian island music and slack key styles, some of the 30’s blues of people like Frank Stokes, plus a little Carter Family, some Cajun tunes and some good original songs.
The band started from an arts grant for Tom to do some of his original tunes and the release of the CD 'When two worlds collide' which was picked up by Sound Vault and had good reviews around the country. They have been playing around the country now for over 9 years and have played Tamworth Festival, Mordialloc Festival, Mount Beauty Muster, pubs like the Lomond, Retreat and Espy and are a regular at the Hickinbotham winery in Dromana.
They have moved into a good mix of country, blues, Cajun, Hawaiian, and early bluegrass and still manage to do a few Johnny Cash songs in their live shows.
The band features;
Tom Forsell- vocals, guitar, mandolin, and accordion
Brian Fitzgerald- on assorted vintage guitars and playing from Memphis to Oahu
Andrew Forrer- Double bass and harmony vocals
And they occasionally bring in a banjo/dobro and or fiddle player.
